Some paintings begin with confidence.
This one began with courage.
Waterfall was the first large-scale silk painting I ever created. At the time, working on a piece of silk this size felt intimidating. Every new section required learning something I had never attempted before, and the painting grew alongside my understanding of the medium over the course of six months.
The inspiration came from a small man-made waterfall at the Jacksonville Zoo—a place that became deeply woven into my family's life while my son was still a baby. Although the original waterfall stood only a few feet tall, memory transformed it into something much larger. In this painting, it becomes an immersive landscape where dense tropical foliage opens to reveal cascading water, weathered rock, and a quiet pool surrounded by vibrant life.
Rather than painting water as simply blue, I explored the many colors that exist within moving water itself. Blues mingle with warm yellows, reflected greens, and subtle shifts of light, while oversized tropical leaves frame the composition as though the viewer is stepping through the jungle and discovering a hidden sanctuary.
Today I can see how much I have grown as a silk painter, but I also recognize this piece for what it truly is—the work that taught me how to think on a monumental scale. Every painting that followed owes something to what I learned while creating Waterfall.

About Silk Painting
Silk responds differently than paper or canvas. Color moves through the fibers, creating luminous transitions and depth that cannot be duplicated on traditional painting surfaces. Because the artwork remains on flowing textile rather than rigid support, it changes subtly with light and movement, giving the piece a living presence within a room.
A Milestone
While every original artwork marks a moment in an artist's journey, Waterfall holds a special place within mine. It represents the moment I stopped seeing silk as something to fear and began understanding what it was capable of becoming.
