Some places become part of you simply because you stayed long enough to truly see them.

A River Runs Through was inspired by Banita Creek in Nacogdoches, Texas. Rather than painting from a single reference photograph, I returned to the creek again and again, climbing down its steep banks at sunset over multiple evenings until I found the exact moment I had been searching for. By the end of the process, I had captured hundreds of photographs—not in search of a perfect composition alone, but to understand what the changing light was doing to the landscape.

Evening transformed everything.

The water did not simply reflect the world around it. It gathered the colors of the trees, the earth, and the fading sky until the creek seemed to absorb the landscape into itself. Golds, blues, reds, and browns became part of the current, while the surrounding forest shimmered in the last light of day.

Before beginning the final painting, I created multiple study pieces to solve the composition and color relationships. The finished work combines watercolor with carefully placed gouache, allowing intricate foliage and woodland textures to emerge while preserving the luminous quality that first drew me to the scene.

The frame itself was also created as part of the artwork's journey. Built from a rescued solid wood frame that I restored and resized specifically for this painting, it retains the character of its original craftsmanship while giving the work a permanent home worthy of the months invested in its creation.
