Ancient Tree is an award-winning original silk tapestry by Amy Bridges, created in 2018 and exhibited in juried regional and international exhibitions.

This work is currently unavailable for purchase while undergoing careful conservation following accidental damage. The artist intends to return the piece to display once restoration is complete.

At the center of this work is a single idea:

What would a tree look like if it contained an entire living world within itself?

Rather than depicting a traditional landscape, Ancient Tree explores a self-contained ecosystem imagined within the structure of an ancient, oversized tree. Vines wind through its interior spaces. Mushroom-like floral forms emerge along its surfaces. Hidden within the composition is a lake-like body of water supporting its own sense of life and atmosphere.

The painting transforms the tree into something more than form—it becomes environment, structure, and world.

About This Work

Ancient Tree represents a pivotal moment in the development of my silk painting practice. It was one of my earliest large-scale explorations of narrative textile landscapes and played a significant role in shaping the direction of my later work in immersive and conceptual nature-based compositions.

Rather than focusing on a single view of nature, this piece explores the idea of nature as a contained world—layered, interconnected, and alive within itself.
