Bubblegum Sky | Original Hand-Painted Bookmark
A layered sky of color and texture comes to life in this original hand-painted bookmark.
Bubblegum Sky begins with a bold foundation of bright bubblegum pink acrylic paint, allowed to fully set before being layered with a deep, moody blue sky. Rather than fully covering the base color, the blue is applied in a way that allows the pink to glow through in places, creating depth and unexpected warmth beneath the surface.
While the blue layer was still wet, soft cloud formations were built using white paint and a stiff round brush. The brush was dabbed into the surface to create loose, fluffy cloud shapes that feel playful, atmospheric, and slightly abstract rather than strictly realistic.
The result is a sky that feels alive—part storm, part dreamscape, part color study—compressed into a small vertical canvas that brings personality to everyday reading.
Each bookmark is individually hand painted, making every piece one-of-a-kind with natural variation in cloud formation and color blending.

About the Work
Bubblegum Sky explores the tension between structure and spontaneity—where controlled layering meets unpredictable blending. It is less a depiction of a sky and more an interpretation of motion, color, and atmosphere in transition.
Each bookmark is part of my ongoing exploration of color, texture, and technique in small-scale studies that allow for experimentation while remaining fully finished, collectible works.
My bookmarks began out of frustration with mass-produced, flimsy designs that couldn’t survive real use. As an avid reader who often moves between multiple books at once—sometimes while listening to audiobooks—I needed something more durable, personal, and able to withstand daily life in motion.
Each piece starts on paper that is sealed with multiple coats of gesso on both sides before painting begins, creating a strong archival base. After the artwork is complete, each bookmark is sealed with several thin layers of either matte or gloss acrylic medium, carefully diluted with water to allow for smooth, even layering without stickiness or buildup.
This slow, layered sealing process allows each piece to remain flexible yet durable, capable of withstanding bending, travel, handling, and everyday use.
Bookmarks are created in small production batches, often 20–30 at a time, with each batch taking up to two weeks to fully complete due to drying and sealing time between layers.
The result is a functional art piece designed not only to be beautiful, but to survive real reading life—books in bags, cars, hands, and everywhere in between.
