Created on 100% silk, Heat captures the weight of a Texas summer when the air itself seems alive.

Inspired by a relentless stretch of days above 100 degrees, this original silk painting explores the feeling of heat rather than simply depicting it. The blazing reds, fiery oranges, glowing yellows, and touches of deep brown create an abstract landscape where warmth becomes almost tangible—like shimmering pavement, dry earth, and air so heavy you can feel it with every breath.

This painting was created during one of those intense heat waves. Air conditioners struggled to keep up, repair companies were overwhelmed, and stepping outside felt like walking into an oven. While working on the painting, I found myself reaching for my water spray bottle as often to cool my son as I did to work on the silk. Creating Heat became a way of transforming an exhausting season into something beautiful.

Like Sinking Lilies, this piece was created through a specialized silk painting process rather than traditional brushwork. White silk was carefully compressed into sculptural folds using crumpled aluminum foil before multiple layers of dye were applied one drop at a time with an eyedropper. As the dye traveled naturally through the silk fibers, the colors blended, separated, and settled in ways that cannot be precisely controlled or repeated. The silk itself becomes an active participant in the final composition, making every original silk painting entirely unique.

Once complete, the original silk painting was professionally mounted to a gallery-wrapped canvas, preserving both the luminous quality of the silk and the presentation of contemporary fine art.

About the Artist

I believe art belongs everywhere—not only on gallery walls, but as part of everyday life.

Silk has become one of my favorite fine art mediums because it refuses to be completely controlled. Rather than forcing the material to behave like canvas, I work with its natural movement, allowing the flow of dye through the silk fibers to become part of the artwork itself. Each original silk painting is a collaboration between artist and medium, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece that cannot be duplicated.
