Dance Through Time Series (2016 Exhibition Work) • One of a Kind • Framed and Ready to Hang
Joy is an original large-scale mixed media painting by Amy Bridges, created as part of the Dance Through Time exhibition series exploring the historical progression and cultural evolution of dance.
Within the series, Joy represents the modern expression of pole dance—not as a subject of taboo, but as a discipline rooted in strength, artistry, athleticism, and personal freedom. It celebrates movement performed for the joy of movement itself.
Composition & Process
The composition is built on a horizontal 3-foot by 4-foot surface, framed in a custom handmade wood frame designed to match the other large works in the Dance Through Time collection.
The background is constructed from sweeping circular brushstrokes of deep red acrylic applied with a large house painting brush. The textured surface creates a sense of energy while allowing the figure to appear suspended within an abstract field of motion.
A metallic silver dance pole rises just off center, serving as the visual anchor for the composition.
Flowing alongside it are vibrant blue aerial silks rendered with exaggerated folds and rich surface texture. One silk descends beside the pole before weaving through the dancer's hand, wrapping around her upper arm, crossing diagonally over her torso, and draping gracefully behind her hips. A second silk is twisted loosely through her opposite hand, balancing the composition while emphasizing fluid movement.
The Figure
The dancer stretches across nearly the entire width of the painting, appearing to float effortlessly in midair.
Supported between the pole and aerial silks, her body opens outward with her chest lifted, legs bent naturally behind her, and pointed toes completing the graceful line of movement. Rather than conveying exertion, the pose communicates complete ease—as though gravity itself has disappeared.
Her eyes remain gently closed, her expression peaceful and content. She dances for no audience, no performance, and no approval. The work captures a private moment of complete immersion in movement and the quiet joy that comes from doing something purely for oneself.
Her face, body, and hair are rendered in highly detailed graphite, with careful attention given to anatomy, muscular engagement, and the subtle shifts of weight required to sustain the pose. A dark blue costume is partially concealed beneath the lighter blue aerial silks, allowing the flowing fabric to become an extension of the movement itself.
