Dance Through Time Series (2016 Exhibition Work) • One of a Kind
Light of Eternal Bliss is an original large-scale mixed media painting by Amy Bridges, created as part of the Dance Through Time exhibition series exploring the historical origins and cultural evolution of traditional dance forms.
This piece is based on the candelabrum dance, a historical ceremonial performance rooted in wedding processions, where dancers would carry lit candelabras to symbolize guidance, prosperity, and the illumination of a couple’s path into married life.
Composition & Process
The foundation of this work begins with a full 3x4 ft sheet of paper painted entirely in black ink. Over this base, a layered landscape emerges in grayscale, forming a long, winding procession path of rolling hills that extends upward through the composition. The left side of the piece contains the structured landscape, while the right side opens into deep black space, emphasizing distance, night, and the feeling of an extended journey.
At the base of the composition, Arabic script is integrated directly into the landscape design, referencing the candelabrum dance in its historical cultural context.
A large acrylic candelabrum dominates the right side of the composition. It is rendered in metallic gold and features eight illuminated candles, each emitting a soft yellow glow that breaks through the dense darkness of the inked background. The light creates contrast and directional movement across the composition, symbolizing illumination along the ceremonial path.
Historically, the size of the candelabrum and the number of lit candles were believed to reflect the prosperity and ease of the couple’s future life, with larger, more elaborate designs associated with wealth and privilege.
Figure Integration
Overlapping both the landscape and the candelabrum is a semi-transparent full-figure belly dancer. The figure is rendered in a diluted mixture of watercolor and gouache, allowing the body to remain visible while still blending into the layered environment.
She wears a purple costume symbolizing royalty and status, reflecting the elevated nature of the ceremonial tradition. Beneath the skirt, a metallic gold underlayer extends through the composition, echoing the gold of the candelabrum. A matching gold headband supports the structure of the ceremonial candle arrangement.
The figure functions as both participant and bridge within the composition—moving between landscape, ritual object, and symbolic light.
