Male Figure Study (Historical Movement Research) | Framed Graphite Drawing (2016)
Juried Exhibition Work • Ready to Hang
This original graphite figure study is part of a 2016 juried solo exhibition exploring historical and cross-cultural movement traditions through detailed anatomical drawing and performance-based figure study.
The series investigates how balance, strength, and expressive motion are communicated through the human body across different dance lineages, with a focus on controlled physical positioning and anatomical precision.
This composition depicts a full-figure male dancer in a controlled, off-center balance pose inspired by traditional movement forms.
The figure stands primarily on the left foot in a grounded, backward-curving “C” shape through the spine. The right leg is lifted and bent in a tree-pose-like position, creating vertical contrast and structural balance.
The right arm wraps across the abdomen with the hand resting near the hip, reinforcing core engagement and compression of the torso. The left arm extends upward in a relaxed, open line, adding vertical lift and counterbalance to the composition.
The figure is oriented downward, with the gaze directed toward the ground, emphasizing internal focus and controlled physical tension rather than performance expression toward an audience.
The subject is depicted wearing a historically inspired costume including loose, draped trousers and a diagonal wrapped sash across one shoulder, along with a fabric belt partially visible within the composition. The figure is barefoot, with lower foot detail intentionally minimized due to compositional focus and viewing distance within the cropped framing.
Every element—including musculature, fabric tension, weight shift, and anatomical alignment—is rendered in highly detailed graphite observational drawing.
Series Context
This work is part of a 2016 academic exhibition examining historical and cultural movement traditions through figurative drawing, with emphasis on the relationship between strength, balance, and controlled physical expression.
The series was developed through extensive observational study of professional dancers and independent anatomical research during the artist’s BFA studies.

About This Work
This piece reflects a research-based approach to figure drawing, where composition is guided by anatomical accuracy, movement logic, and the physical principles of balance rather than narrative staging or theatrical presentation.
