Pepper Flower | Limited Edition Woodcut Print (8 x 10)
Limited Edition • Hand-Pulled Woodcut Print • Rice Paper
Pepper Flower is an original hand-pulled woodcut print by Amy Poole (Bridges), created in 2013 during early explorations in relief printmaking.
Each print is individually inked and pressed by hand onto delicate rice paper, making every impression unique in tone, texture, and ink variation. This edition includes both signed edition prints and a small number of artist proofs.
The artist proofs exist outside the numbered edition due to natural variation in the carving and printing process, but remain fully resolved, original works in their own right.
Inspiration
Pepper Flower grew out of an intuitive printmaking process where the image evolved through carving rather than strict planning.
The title comes from the way the carved block began to accumulate unexpected texture and variation during the cutting process, creating a surface that felt more organic and responsive than initially intended.
Rather than correcting these shifts, they became part of the final composition.
The result is a botanical study that feels partially structured and partially discovered—like a form emerging through repetition and adjustment.
Composition
The print features a botanical arrangement centered on a partially opened flower bud located in the lower right portion of the composition.
A curved stem enters from the left side, moves through the central field, and returns toward the edge of the composition, creating a circular flow of movement.
The composition suggests the moment before full bloom, with structure and potential held in balance.
The carved woodcut texture emphasizes contrast between inked black areas and the natural surface of the rice paper, reinforcing both line and negative space.

About This Work
Pepper Flower is an early printmaking study focused on process-led form development.
It reflects a moment where structure, variation, and material behavior began to shape the final image as much as the original concept, creating a work that balances intention with discovery.
