Precious | Original Framed Graphite Figure Study (2016)
Juried Exhibition Work • Ready to Hang
Precious is an original graphite figure study created in 2016 as part of a juried solo exhibition exploring the physicality, athleticism, and historical context of pole dance as a movement discipline.
This work reflects a broader intention within the series to document diverse body types in motion and to challenge reductive perceptions of pole dance as purely aesthetic or performative. Instead, the series approaches it as a structured physical practice involving strength, control, coordination, and confidence.
The composition depicts a full-figure female dancer engaged with a vertical pole in a transitional movement toward inversion. One hand extends above the head gripping the pole, while the opposite hand supports lower positioning behind the body. One leg begins to lift in preparation for a controlled inverted mount, capturing the early phase of a pole-supported rotation.
The figure is positioned with the pole behind the body, emphasizing spatial relationship, balance, and tension within the movement rather than theatrical presentation.
Every anatomical detail—including musculature, weight distribution, and fabric tension—is rendered in highly detailed graphite observation, consistent with the rigorous figure study approach used throughout the exhibition series.
Series Context
This piece is part of a 2016 academic exhibition exploring the intertwined origins and physical disciplines of pole dance and belly dance. The research behind this body of work emphasized movement study, cultural context, and the athletic requirements of dance-based performance.
Within the series, Precious represents an intentional inclusion of diverse body types, reinforcing the accessibility and physical universality of the discipline.
