Somethin' in the Water – Original Framed Alligator Acrylic Painting

An original acrylic painting capturing the quiet tension of an alligator just beneath the surface, where what appears to be a floating branch may be something entirely different.

Growing up in Louisiana, I learned early that fishing often meant sharing the water with alligators. Sometimes you saw them immediately. Other times, all you noticed was what looked like a piece of driftwood quietly drifting nearby—until it moved. That memory became the inspiration behind Somethin' in the Water.

The alligator featured in this painting was studied from one living at the zoo in Lufkin, Texas. Seeing it both above and below the water revealed an unexpected transformation. Above the surface, its skin appeared surprisingly light. Beneath the water, greens and deep blacks blended into the reflections until the body seemed to disappear entirely. I wanted to capture that moment when only the eyes and the suggestion of a head remain visible.

To emphasize this perspective, I sculpted the raised eye ridges and textured skin directly onto the canvas using acrylic texture paste blended with sand. These sculpted elements extend approximately one inch from the surface, giving the painting a dimensional quality that changes with shifting light and viewing angles. The canvas has been reinforced on the back to support the added texture and weight.

The reclaimed wood frame immediately reminded me of weathered driftwood floating through southern waterways. I converted the frame into a custom floater-style frame to properly display the canvas while preserving its rustic character. The piece arrives wired and ready to hang.
