Under the Anemone | Original Hand-Painted Bookmark
A quiet moment unfolds beneath the gentle movement of the sea in this original hand-painted bookmark.
Under the Anemone depicts two clownfish caught in a familiar ocean rhythm—one nestled safely within the protective folds of an anemone, while the other hovers nearby, hesitant and persistent, as if trying to coax movement from within.
Rather than a literal scene, the painting captures a relational moment—tension between safety and exploration, stillness and motion, hesitation and trust.
The background is built in layered tones inspired by underwater light, creating depth and movement that echo the natural sway of the ocean environment. The anemone becomes both shelter and boundary, framing the interaction between the two fish.
Each bookmark is individually hand painted, making every piece a unique interpretation of ocean life and subtle storytelling.

About the Work
Each bookmark is part of my ongoing exploration of color, texture, and technique in small-scale studies that allow for experimentation while remaining fully finished, collectible works.
My bookmarks began out of frustration with mass-produced, flimsy designs that couldn’t survive real use. As an avid reader who often moves between multiple books at once, I needed bookmarks that could withstand daily life—books in bags, cars, hands, and constant movement.
Each piece is built on paper that is sealed with multiple coats of gesso on both sides before painting begins. Once complete, each bookmark is sealed with several thin layers of acrylic medium, diluted with water to allow smooth application without stickiness or buildup.
This layered process creates a durable, flexible surface designed for real-world use, resulting in functional art that is meant to be lived with, not stored away.
