Who Am I is an original limited edition intaglio etching by Amy Poole, created during her early printmaking studies as an exploration of identity, perception, and self-definition through figurative reduction.

Only two prints remain in the edition.

This small-scale etching focuses on a cropped, intimate view of the face, rendered in close detail through engraved linework and traditional printmaking techniques. The composition isolates a partial portrait—eye, nose, forehead, and hair—tilted within the frame to emphasize uncertainty, transition, and introspection.

Inspiration

Who Am I was created during a formative period in my art education, when questions of identity, direction, and artistic purpose were central to my studio practice.

Rather than resolving those questions, this work holds them visually.

It reflects the internal process of becoming—when definition is still in motion, and self-understanding is shaped through study, experimentation, and repetition.

The cropped portrait became a way to examine identity not as a fixed concept, but as something partial, shifting, and continually forming.

Composition

The composition presents a tightly framed section of a human face, rendered through etched linework in traditional intaglio printmaking.

The angle of the face introduces tension and imbalance, reinforcing the feeling of transition and introspection.

By isolating only part of the face, the work emphasizes fragmentation and focus simultaneously—inviting the viewer to complete the image through perception rather than detail.
